Community Engagement

Girls Like Me, Inc.

Girls Like Me is a community-based organization devoted to the development of confidence, skill sets, and character of minority girls. We promote positive and engaging academic environments that inspire minority girls' interest and exposure to STEM.
I have been a member of Girls Like Me since its founding in 2021 and was appointed the Chief of Staff for the 2023-2024 School Year. I have loved watching Girls Like Me grow from just a Greensboro location to Trailblazers in Atlanta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Alabama.

I was responsible to establishing and maintaining relationships with local middle and elementary schools, creating lessons and slide decks for presentations at events, and supervised slide decks submitted by fellow trailblazers. I aided in the creation of the first "Innovation Day" which featured a college/career fair in partnership with another STEM outreach organization.

Gingerbread home building competition. The Girls Like Me Trailblazers competed along side middle school girls. Pictured is our gingerbread house. Middle schoolers learned about geometry and how the environment can effect the design of a structure.

Trailblazers taught the fundamentals of flight (drag, thrust, gravity, and lift) and then elementary students designed their own paper airplanes and engaged in a competition for the furthest flying airplane.

Middle school students were given a location, a target audience, and a problem and had to create a prototype for a product that would serve their audience and solve their problem, keeping location and environmental factors in mind.

As the Chapter Graphic Designer, I am responsible for creating the flyers for all programs and services. Here are just a few flyers I created.

As the elected Miss Crimson, I am in charge of community service. Pictured is the royal court (Misses and Misters) sorting through over 500 collected hygiene products that would be donated to several women's and family shelters in Greensboro.

Miss Crimson, and the other Misses plan and execute the "Mister 1913 Pageant". Here was our Royal Court from the October 2021. During the service pageant, contestants collected 500 canned goods that would be donated to the Greensboro Urban Ministry.

Global Engineering Leadership Program (GELP)

I was 1 of 18 students selected to go to Italy for 10 days (May 2023) to tour several large Engineering companies including Lockheed Martin, Boeing. I engaged with students at the University of Naples Engineering Grad program. This trip included a semester-long course that covered global engagement, topics from Lean Six Sigma, and other general engineering fundamentals.

This is one of the largest churches in the world - Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. It was so incredibly beautiful! It was HUGE. The ceilings in this church, along with a lot of other cathedrals in Italy, were stunning.

Me and the rest of the GELPers touring the ruins of Pompeii! This was an incredible tour through the society at the time and amazing to see how much the city has maintained its structure over time!

This is us at the top of Mt. Vesuvius - the still active volcano that destroyed Pompeii! The volcano is more than 4,000 feet above sea level and is expected to erupt within the next 200 years!

Girl Up Women in STEM - Namibia

In 2018, I was selected by the United Nations Girl Up Foundation to go to Namibia, a country in Africa, to participate in a two-week introduction to STEM program. The participants consisted of 100 girls from five different countries - the United States, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Kenya, and Namibia. The program was an array of STEM classes taught by engineers at Google, Intel, and NASA. This program sparked my interest in STEM. I took elementary coding classes taught by Google, learned about space exploration from NASA and built an automated car with Intel (pictured below).

Me and the other American students for "culture night". Each country performed a skit about their country. We performed an SNL inspired skit and interview with Michelle Obama (portrayed by me) and ending with "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus - a global favorite, in my opinion :)

My group -"The STEMinists", composed of students from a mix of every country. We lived with our group in dorm rooms and started each day with small classes about culture, leadership, teamwork and STEM.

This was a self driving car that me and another student (from Ethiopia) built in a class taught my Intel! We named the car "Hermani" - a mix our names: Hermela and Tolani.
