Overview:
I designed and created a new and lively animation for the Dynamic Island, customizable for integration of a plethora of applications.
Timeline:
Tools:
-
XCode - Objective C
-
Internal Testing Device
Challenges:
-
Learning Objective-C was a major challenge but fun to do small mini projects early in my internship to try to get adjusted to the language.
-
Reaching out to other teams to understand how to implement my animation framework into another code block to get it to animate.

Problem:
iPhones 14 Pro and newer, feature a new element, called the Dynamic Island, the pill shaped bar at the top of your screen. This Dynamic Island however, is limited in its current capabilities. To be truly dynamic, it needs to more versatile!
Outcomes:
-
Taught myself how to code in Objective-C and familiarized myself with the complex system that the Dynamic Island lives within to be able to add a new animation to it.
-
Programmed the new animation to be triggered by a specific element. It will be released in one of the iOS 17 updates.
-
Worked beside the Human Interaction team to design the animation both specifically for one element and designed a framework for the animation to be customizable by the engineer so that it would be appropriate for any future uses.
-
Became the first intern to work on the Dynamic Island and the third Apple engineer!
-
Presented final project in front of 40+ managers and directors at Apple.
Process
Understanding
First step is understanding what the Dynamic Island is and how it works for users as well as how the present animations are coded
Inception
Working alongside the Human Interface team to decide what kind of animation to create.
Learning to code in
Objective C to fit the rest of the code base for this project.
Iterations
Starting with creating a framework for the animation. Testing it with the Human Interface team to create a customizable, easy to integrate animation.
Selecting a specific apple experience to be enhance by my animation and implementing that into the iOS17 code base.
Presentation
Presented and demoed animation to 50+ managers, VP's, and engineers.
